Herbs for the Skin

The skin is the body's largest organ. The skin forms the body's first line of defense against harmful organisms. Proper care of the skin is very important in the prevention of many illnesses, but some commercial skin care treatments are too harsh or drying for sensitive skin. Herbs provide a gentler healing alternative, while still cleansing and conditioning the skin effectively.

    Aloe Vera

  1. The leaves of the aloe vera plant have been used successfully for many years to treat skin ailments. The aloe vera plant's anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties make it especially useful in skin care products. Making a skin conditioner from aloe vera is simple and inexpensive. Mix two parts aloe vera gel with one part vitamin E gel, then apply the mixture to the skin. This aloe vera and vitamin E combination tones, smooths and evens the complexion. Any unused mixture should be refrigerated.
  2. Lavender

  3. Lavender is often considered a beauty herb. This extremely aromatic herb contains anti-inflammatory properties and is also used in aromatherapy due to the relaxing effect of its scent. The oil from lavender can be used as a potent skin conditioner and toner. When using lavender on the skin, it is important to test for skin sensitivity. Dab a small amount of lavender oil on an inconspicuous area of the skin and monitor that area for any redness or irritation. If there is no adverse reaction, a diluted lavender herb mix can be used. Combine lavender oil, rose water and vitamin E in a small mister. After cleansing the skin, mist with the rose water mixture as needed throughout the day for a skin treatment that moisturizes, conditions and calms.
  4. Lemon Balm

  5. Lemon balm is a natural, gentle cleanser for the skin. The herb has antibacterial and anodyne properties. Lemon balm can help calm irritated skin and is helpful in conditioning normal to oily skin. A lemon balm infusion skin toner can be made by steeping the herb's leaves for a few minutes, then applying the infusion to the skin with a cotton pad. This herbal skin toner will help balance and hydrate the skin, and is useful in preventing and treating any skin breakouts. Lemon balm oil diluted with a light carrier oil makes an ideal moisturizer for dry skin.
