Beauty Ingredient: Benefits of Turmeric Powder

I was recently asked if I stocked turmeric soap. Occasionally I use turmeric powder in my soaps for a swirl of umber color, but I was surprised that someone was actually looking for a soap that was loaded with the stuff. Upon further research, I happily discovered a new herbal soap that touts fascinating benefits.

Turmeric is high in antioxidants that slow down cell damage and is traditionally used in India as an antiseptic. It’s widely used as a skin exfoliant and it’s said to improve your skin's complexion, texture and health. In many Asian countries, it is used by women for skin care, particularly to discourage facial and body hair. It is also used to help with inflammatory skin conditions, such as acne, dry skin, psoriasis and eczema. What a powerful little spice!

A couple notes of caution when using turmeric: Avoid turmeric use during pregnancy; if using turmeric powder in soaps, be warned that it will stain fabrics when used in liberal amounts.

Little Carrot Muffins Recipe

Recipe Ingredients

    • 13⁄4 cups all-purpose flour                                       
    • 1⁄2 cup granulated sugar
    • 13⁄4 tsp baking powder
    • 11⁄2 tsp ground cinnamon
    • 1⁄2 tsp nutmeg, preferably freshly grated
    • 1⁄2 tsp baking soda
    • 1⁄2 tsp salt
    • 2 jars (4 oz each) baby food carrots
    • 3⁄4 cup freshly squeezed orange juice (see Tip)
    • 1⁄4 cup vegetable oil
    • 1 large egg
    • 1 tsp vanilla extract
    • Orange Icing
    • 1 cup confectioners’ sugar
    • 1 Tbsp 1% lowfat milk
    • 1 tsp freshly grated orange peel
    • 1⁄2 tsp vanilla extract
    • Carrot decoration: large orange and large green gumdrops or jellied fruit slices

Recipe Preparation

1. Heat oven to 375°F. Lightly grease a 12-cup mini-muffin pan (each cup should have a scant 2 Tbsp capacity).2. In a large bowl, stir flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, cinnamon, nutmeg, baking soda and salt until thoroughly combined.3. In a medium bowl, whisk carrots, orange juice, oil, egg and vanilla until well blended. Add all at once to flour mixture, then stir with a rubber spatula just until evenly moistened. Spoon half the batter into muffin cups. Leave remaining batter at room temperature.4. Bake 15 to 18 minutes until a wooden pick inserted in centers comes out clean. Cool in pan on wire rack 5 minutes then remove from pan to rack to cool completely. Repeat with remaining batter. 5. Icing and Carrot Decoration: Mix icing ingredients in a small bowl until smooth. Cover and refrigerate. Cut orange gumdrops into 24 carrot shapes, each about 1 in. long. Cut green gumdrops into 24 little strips. Stick onto tops of carrots.6. Up to 1 day before serving: Spread 1⁄2 tsp icing on each muffin. (Icing may weep around edges. That’s normal.) Top with a carrot. Refrigerate covered until serving.TIP Grate the orange peel for the icing and wrap airtight before juicing the oranges for the muffins.Planning Tips: The muffins can be stored airtight at room temperature up to 2 days or frozen up to 2 months. The decorations and icing can be made up to 2 days ahead. Re­frigerate icing tightly covered; store decorations airtight at room temperature. Ice and decorate muffins up to 1 day before serving.

Peach Medicine, Energetics and Smoothie Recipe

It’s peach season here in Washington State, which means you’ll often find me standing over the sink with a peach in hand and the juices dripping down my arms and off my elbows. Oh the sweet taste of summer!
Peaches, like most foods, can be an important part of our medicine chest. These fruits have energetic properties that can be used therapeutically. Traditional practices of herbal medicine always used energetics to better understand how to use herbs as well as food.
Energetics? What does that mean?
Imagine that you are eating a really ripe peach. What sensations do you experience? Dryness? Warmth? Moistness? Coolness? Do you taste bitterness? Sweetness? Sourness? Spiciness?
These answers give us insight into how peach can be used to help us when we are not well and to restore balance to our body.
Now imagine you have a bad sunburn. How does it feel? Cool? Moist? Hot? Dry?
What do you imagine would make it feel better? Something that is hot and dry? Or something that is cooling and moistening?
These are the simple energetic principles that can be applied to herbal remedies whether for acute or chronic conditions. This fall, LearningHerbs.com will have a special program teaching about energetics in depth.
So back to peaches.
You’ll probably agree that when you eat a peach you experience moistness and coolness. We can then think of times when we experience relief by applying something moist and cool. Sunburns come to my mind as well as inflamed mucous membranes such as in the throat or inflamed intestines due to prolonged constipation.
Voila! We are now using our food as medicine!
But the benefits of peach don’t just stop there. In herbalism, almost the entire peach tree can be used in a variety of ways.
I first learned about using peach from New Mexican herbalist, Kiva Rose.
    Peach is a traditional Appalachian and Southwestern remedy that has been gaining well-deserved attention from the herbal community in the last several years. This aromatic herb is both tasty and effective, and its calming and cooling properties give it a wide range of applicability. It has the ability to calm anxiety, heal wounds, soothe nausea and even moderate histamine reactions. The leaves, bark, flowers and even the fruit pits of this well known tree provide us an with an amazing array of healing actions that culminate in Peach being one of North America’s most important plant medicines.Kiva Rose, Herbalist
My favorite way to use peach as medicine is to tincture the peach twigs in brandy. This cooling and moistening remedy is perfect for hot, red inflamed problems. I use this extensively for insect bites, both internally and externally. I’ve seen it taking the swelling out of bee stings in minutes. Peach twig tincture is also a relaxing nervine that can be mildly calming as well.
Peach leaves can be dried and then used in a tea.
Peach pits are used in Chinese medicine for strengthening qi and moving blood. It is commonly used for fibroids. There are some cautions to using peach pits so it’s best to consult a trained herbalist before trying this on your own.
Peaches are also a great remedy for the heat of summer to help our bodies cool down. If you had more peaches than you knew what to do with, you could use them externally as a facial. Simply mash up the peach fruit, spread on the face, let dry, and then rinse.

Peach Smoothie
For this recipe you’ll need...
  • 4 large peaches
  • 1 can of coconut milk
  • 1 tablespoon of minced ginger
  • 1 pinch of cinnamon
  • Sprig of mint or parsley
Add the following ingredients to the blender.
Peach fruit (cut out the pit!)
Coconut Milk (Organic and full fat is best)
Ginger
Blend well. If you want the mixture to be colder you can also add a few ice cubes.
Serve with a pinch of cinnamon and a sprig of mint or parsley.

Home Remedies Around the World

Find out how mothers cure common ailments—and whether it really works

Chicken soup may be good for the soul, but some people swear that it’s also good for the body. Many Americans reach for a steaming bowl of chicken soup whenever they’ve got a cold, while the equivalent remedy in Japan is ginger tea. But are these home cures, passed down from generation to generation, really therapeutic? We consulted experts about folk remedies from around the world to see if they’ve got any merit.
American Moms: Chicken Soup for Cold Symptoms
Dosage: Sip on as much soup as you can manage, and repeat as necessary.
Verdict: Chicken soup inhibits white blood cell movement by a whopping 75 percent, which can reduce the symptoms of an upper respiratory tract infection, according to a study by University of Nebraska researchers.

Native American Moms: Garlic Rub for Bee Stings
Dosage: Crush garlic bulbs and wrap them in a cloth. Rub the poultice onto the sting.
Verdict: Do it. Bee venom is acidic, and the natural components of garlic will neutralize the pain so you’ll feel immediate relief, says Ranella Hirsch, MD, clinical assistant professor at Boston University’s School of Medicine in Massachusetts, and past president of the American Society of Cosmetic Dermatology and Aesthetic Surgery.

Greek Moms: Chamomile Herbal Tea with Honey and Brandy for Cold Symptoms
Dosage: Fill a pot with 2 cups of boiling water, add a teaspoon of loose chamomile tea, a cinnamon stick, three cloves and either an orange or lemon peel. Let steep for five minutes. Pour the combination into a cup and add a teaspoon of honey and a splash of Metaxa, a Greek brandy. Drink.
Verdict: This could help, says Kathi Kemper, MD, author of The Holistic Pediatrician and director of the Center for Integrative Medicine at Wake Forest University’s School of Medicine in North Carolina. Chamomile has relaxing properties, honey can help with a cough, and orange and lemon are used in cleaning products to zap germs, Dr. Kemper says. And the brandy? “It would probably be an enjoyable addition,” she adds.

Texas Moms: Meat Tenderizer for Jellyfish Stings
Dosage: Rub meat tenderizer powder directly onto the sting. Wash it off after 10 minutes. Note: The seasoned form of tenderizer may cause irritation, so make sure you use plain meat tenderizer.
Verdict: Skip it. A May 2010 study by researchers at the Skidaway Institute of Oceanography found that papain and bromelain, ingredients commonly found in meat tenderizer, will actually make you feel worse. The pain from a jellyfish sting is caused when there is discharge of jellyfish nematocysts. Unfortunately, meat tenderizer causes even more nematocysts to be discharged.

Japanese Moms: Ginger Tea for Cold and Flu Symptoms
Dosage: Mix 2/3 cup of boiling water with 2 teaspoons of grated ginger and 2 teaspoons of sugar. Add a few slices of fresh ginger root and drink the tea.
Verdict: Helps with some symptoms. Ginger can stimulate your circulation, which will help your body get rid of a cold faster. It’s also been shown to reduce nausea, and drinking liquid when you’re sick can help with congestion, Dr. Kemper says. Adding to that is a 2009 Iranian study that found women who were nauseated and vomiting decreased their illness by 50 percent after taking 1,000 mg of ginger daily.

Chinese Moms: Egg Rub for Headaches
Dosage: Hard-cook three eggs and peel off shell quickly. Wrap one in a cotton handkerchief and rub it on your head, face, neck and back. When the egg cools, throw it out and repeat the rub with a new, warm egg. Don’t shower for 24 hours.
Verdict: Skip it. Not one of our experts could figure out any positive effects of this remedy. “The use of an egg in the Chinese home remedy baffles me,” says Judy Fulop, MS, ND, integrative medicine specialist at the Center for Integrative Medicine at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago. And while Dr. Kemper says that they may be using the egg as a heating pad, it would only be helpful for a backache.

German Moms: Apple Cider Vinegar Rub for Sunburn
Dosage: Rub apple cider vinegar onto the burn. If the burn covers your entire body, pour two or three cups of the vinegar into your bath and soak in the water.
Verdict: It’s a toss-up. Aloe vera would work much better on a sunburn, but when all else fails, an apple cider vinegar rub couldn’t hurt, Fulop says. In fact, an apple cider vinegar poultice is commonly rubbed onto aching body parts because the alkaline nature of the vinegar decreases pain.

Spanish Moms: Garlic Herbal Tea with Honey for Cold Symptoms
Dosage: Bring 3 cups of water with 3 cloves of garlic to a boil. Turn off the heat, and add ½ cup of fresh lemon juice and ½ cup of honey. Drink ½ cup of the warm mixture three times daily.
Verdict: Each ingredient can help with a cold or the flu, Dr. Kemper says. The garlic has antibacterial properties, lemon is loaded with vitamin C and the honey will soothe your cough. “But it sounds like it will taste terrible,” she adds.

Russian and Ukrainian Moms: Vinegar Rub for Fever
Dosage: Soak a cotton bed sheet in a mixture of vinegar and water, and wipe it on your entire body.
Verdict: Eh. “I don’t know what vinegar would do, but if you use lukewarm water, it could lower your fever,” says Jon Abramson, MD, physician-in-chief at Brenner Children’s Hospital in North Carolina, and former chairman of the American Academy of Pediatrics committee on infectious diseases. Instead of making the mixture and spoiling a sheet, Dr. Abramson suggests simply hopping into a lukewarm bath to slowly lower your body temperature to the 98–99°F range.

South African Moms: Honey and Cinnamon Paste for Acne and Facial Blemishes
Dosage: Mix 4 tablespoons of honey with 3 teaspoons of ground cinnamon. Before going to sleep, apply it to your face; leave it on overnight. Apply as often as needed.
Verdict: The cinnamon is the most important part of this mix because it acts as an anti-inflammatory, and will take down the redness and puffiness, says Dr. Hirsch. But honey is also known for its healing and moisturizing properties when it’s applied to the skin.

Recipe Ingredients

    • SAUCE
    • 1 can (8 oz) tomato sauce (1 cup)
    • 1 cup bottled barbecue sauce
    • 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
    • 2 cans (4.5 oz each) diced green chilies
    • 1/4 cup chili powder
    • 1 tsp each ground cumin and dried oregano
    • 1/4 tsp ground cinnamon
    • One 2 1/2-lb well-trimmed boneless pork loin roast
    • 1/2 cup chopped cilantro
    • Nutrition Facts
    • Yield 6 servings
    • Servings 6
    • Amount Per Serving
    • Calories 265

Recipe Preparation

1. Mix Sauce ingredients in a 3-qt or larger slow-cooker. Add pork, then spoon sauce over pork just to cover.

2. Cover cooker and cook on high 3 1/2 hours or on low 8 to 10 hours, until pork is fork-tender. Remove pork to a cutting board and, using 2 forks, pull meat into shreds.

3. Pour sauce into serving bowl; stir in the cilantro and shredded pork.Roll up in warmed burrito-size flour tortillas, or serve in taco shells or on burger buns. Shredded lettuce, diced red onion and sour cream are all great toppings.

Recipe Preparation

1. Mix Sauce ingredients in a 3-qt or larger slow-cooker. Add pork, then spoon sauce over pork just to cover.

2. Cover cooker and cook on high 3 1/2 hours or on low 8 to 10 hours, until pork is fork-tender. Remove pork to a cutting board and, using 2 forks, pull meat into shreds.

3. Pour sauce into serving bowl; stir in the cilantro and shredded pork.Roll up in warmed burrito-size flour tortillas, or serve in taco shells or on burger buns. Shredded lettuce, diced red onion and sour cream are all great toppings.

    • 1 slow-cooker liner (we used Reynolds)
    • 1/4 cup packed brown sugar
    • 2 Tbsp each paprika and dried minced onion
    • 1 1/2 tsp salt-free chili powder
    • 1 1/2 tsp salt
    • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
    • 1/2 tsp allspice (optional)
    • 4 lb bone-in pork shoulder roast
    • 3/4 cup apple cider vinegar
    • 1/2 cup sliced scallions
    • 24 small dinner rolls, split
    • Accompaniments: hot pepper sauce, coleslaw

Recipe Preparation

1. Line a 4-qt or larger slow-cooker with liner. Mix 1 Tbsp of the brown sugar, the paprika, minced onion, chili powder, salt, garlic powder and allspice. Sprinkle 1 Tbsp into bottom of slow-cooker. Rub remaining mixture over pork. Add vinegar and remaining brown sugar to slow-cooker; stir to mix. Add pork.

2. Cover and cook on low 8 to 10 hours until pork is fork-tender. Remove pork to cutting board and pull into shreds. Return to slow-cooker; add scallions and toss to coat.

3. Put about 1/4 cup onto each bun bottom. Top with bun tops.

Introduction

The acai (pronounced a-sigh-e) palm tree and its berries are indigenous to Central and South America. The palm tree is thin and approximately 25 meters high with groups of branches and ribbon like leaves. The berries hang from the branches in large clusters. Each tree produces about 20 kg of fruit per year and is one of the leading crops in Brazil. It was first used by tribes in the Amazon for various medicinal purposes, among them the ability to build and strengthen the immune system, fight infection, protect the heart, and as a natural remedy for erectile dysfunction. It was also revered as an energy food, and was traditionally pulped to make wine.

Typical Preparations

Because the berries will start to spoil within 24 hours of being harvested, they must be quickly turned into juice, wine, or freeze dried and turned into a powder. The line of Acai offered by Mountain Rose Herbs is freeze dried.

Summary

Because the acai berry is relatively new to the western world, very little research has been done on it and its effects, especially in the area of rapid weight loss, which may be exaggerated. What is known is that the acai berry is extremely high in antioxidants and anthocyanins, rich in protein fiber, vitamin E and iron. It is reported that it helps promote cardiovascular and digestive functions. It is naturally low in sugar and the flavor is described as a mixture of red wine and chocolate.
