step 2Attach pole to shed or wall
I attached a strong chrome pole with metal fittings to the shed. You could use a curtain pole. Make sure it is at the correct height especially if you want to grow plants in a trough below ( see step 7). This uses the surplus water from the pockets above.

step 3Attach hanging shoe store
Use strong hooks or wire to attach the shoe store. They must be strong enough to support the weight of the compost, plants and water.

step 4Test drainage
Pour water into the pockets to check the drainage, if they don't drain then make a few small holes in each of the pockets.

step 5Fill each pocket with compost
Add a good moisture retaining compost, fill to 1" below the rim so that water does not pour out over the rim.

step 6Add plants or seeds
Sow seeds or add seedlings I suggest.... - herbs thyme, sorrel, chives - salad mixed leaf, mustard, cut and come again, or spinach - minibel tomatoes - 'petit pois peas you can eat the young leaflets and tendrils

step 7"Drip Aid"
Use a piece of wood to make sure the excess water drips into the trough below.

Butterbur Helps Hay Fever

As effective as antihistamines without the drowsiness
A herb used in cough medicines since the Middle Ages has shown great promise as a treatment for hay fever. Swiss and German researchers have found that the purple butterbur, Petasites hybridus, is as effective as antihistamine drugs in treating seasonal allergies. But unlike antihistamines, butterbur does not cause drowsiness, so allergy sufferers can drive automobiles and operate machinery while taking the herb.
Butterbur is a perennial herb found in Europe, Asia and parts of North America. Traditionally the roots were used, but recently the plant's leaves have attracted attention. Both the leaves and the roots contain compounds called petasines that inhibit the body's ability to produce leukotrienes involved in allergic reactions. A U.S. and German study published last year in the journal Neurology showed that butterbur is highly effective against migraine headache.




Approximately 20 percent people in industrialized nations suffer from hay fever. Symptoms include sneezing, runny nose, nasal congestion and itching of the mucous membranes. In some patients headaches and fatigue can be debilitating enough to interfere with work and normal social functioning. Antihistamines are effective in reducing runny nose and sneezing, but drowsiness is a common side effect, even for newer so called "non-drowsy" antihistamines. 

In the butterbur study, published in the journal Phytotherapy Research, three groups of patients received pills made from either butterbur extract, fexofenadine or a placebo. Fexofenadine, a non-drowsy antihistamine, is sold as Allegra in the U.S. and as Telfast 180 in Europe. Patients taking either butterbur or fexofenadine showed similar improvements in total symptom scores while patients taking a placebo showed no improvement. The results were statistically significant, which is a way of saying that the effect of butterbur on hay fever is unlikely to be explained by pure chance.
Although side effects were reported in each treatment group, three-quarters of side effects in the fexofenadine group were related to drowsiness, compared to just over one-third in the groups receiving placebos or butterbur.
"Because butterbur does not cause the drowsiness that is so often associated with other antihistamines, it could be particularly useful for patients who cannot tolerate other therapies," lead researcher Andreas Schapowal said.
In its raw form butterbur contains pyrrolizidine alkaloids which can cause liver damage. The butterbur extract in the study is made from only the leaves of plants in specially controlled conditions and uses carbon dioxide extraction to reduce the level of pyrrolizidine alkaloids below the level of detection, 35 parts per billion. In the study liver function was normal in the patients receiving the butterbur extract. Butterbur products are commercially available in the U.S. under the names Migravent and Petadolex but have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration.
Schapowal also led a 2002 study published in the British Journal of Medicine in which it was found that butterbur compared favourably with cetirizine, another non-drowsy antihistamine. Cetirizine is sold in the U.S. under the name Zyrtec.

Growing Stevia

We find that Stevia will grow in almost any climate, if it is given the correct soil, fertilizer, and light conditions.  Full sun is preferred but not hot weather, but it is adaptable to most areas of the country.  Stevia is not frost hardy and must be planted each year. In areas where there is no frost, Stevia is still replanted each year, due to the poor growth of the 2nd year root system. Stevia should be planted in the spring after the soil temperature reaches 65 deg F., in full sun and in a light, sandy, open, well drained soil with neutral pH.  In southern states, stevia will require some filtered afternoon shading.  Use a standard garden fertilized. Do not use a lawn fertilizer or fertilizers with high nitrogen. Adding extra Boron will help keep the Stevioside level high. If soil could be “mounded up” into a “raised bed,” this would be even better. Apply a layer of mulch, such as grass clippings, or bark mulch. This will help keep roots cool, preserve water, keeps the leave clean from soil (prevents dirty taste in green powder) and hold down weeds. Avoid weeding around mature stevia plants as their brittle branches are easily broken. Avoid overwatering after transplanting and in winter as houseplant. Keep evenly moist during summer heat. Drip or soaker hose are very effective for summer watering. 


Stevia grows best in cooler summer weather, after and before danger of  frost. Plant outside early spring in vegetable garden after danger of frost. Methods which allow a gardener to plant earlier, such as tunnels, hot caps, and such, are very beneficial. Pinch tips out about every 3-4 weeks for first 1-2 months. This will encourage side branching  which will create a bushier plant, that is not spindly. With the last pinching, (about 1-2 months after planting) mulch plants with bark or straw.   Harvest entire plant as flower buds appear.  Harvest only in the morning for highest glycoside /sugar content, whether pinching tips or entire plants. The full harvest will occur in late September or early October. Because it is a member of the “Aster” family, once flowering has begun, not a single normal leaf will be produced. Removing flower heads is not effective. Failure to harvest plants before several flowers have opened, will allow these flowers to impart a bitter/dirty flavor to the leaves.  Harvesting is done by cutting the entire plant at the base. With a rubber band, tie loose branches together and hang upside down to dry under warm, dark, drafty conditions for 2-4 days. Avoid using food dehydrators or open oven doors as this will also tend to cause a bitter flavor. “Rake” fingers through branches to remove crisp-dry leaves. Remove any small branches and grind leaves into powder using an electric coffee grinder for 25-30 seconds. Food processors are not as effective because of their slow RPMs. Store green powder in “Mason” jars, “Zip-lock” baggies etc.   Dried green stevia powder will last almost indefinitely or at least until the next harvest.

Stevia rebaudiana seed is available, but difficult to find for several reasons:
1. Seed is normally very low germination. However from our work with a research university, we have discovered that if you select the very dark seeds and plant only them your germination should exceed 85%.
2. Stevia grown from seed may or may not be sweet. Usually only universities grow Stevia from seed - looking for that one in a million plants that have more Stevioside than the plants we sell.

Once you find Stevia plants with high levels of Stevioside, it is best to propagate them from cuttings or tissue culture. Herbal Advantage, Inc. is currently working with farmers in the USA, Europe, and Russia to produce Stevia on large scale farms.
The leaves contain about 12% Stevioside (one of the sweet factors). The old brown Stevia leaves will contain 8 to 10% Stevioside. The stems contain about 3% Stevioside. The leaves should be harvested early in the morning and dried in the full sun. Break the leaf with your hands or put them a blender to make powder. We have 2 Stevia cook books in stock.

Hand-sewn flowering teas are produced in remote tea gardens in southwestern Yunnan province in China near the borders of Laos and Vietnam. White, green and black teas are picked in the early mornings. While damp, the tea leaves are flattened and sewn with cotton thread into the various shapes and bundles. (Tea leaves may also be scented with jasmine blossoms before sewing begins for a more floral flavor.) Some shapes take about one minute to sew while other more elaborate designs may take up to 10 minutes. While still moist, the leaves are shaped into balls, mushrooms, cones, etc, and finally, the teas go through the usual drying, oxidation and firing process which closes the process and provides the finished product.
The line of flowering teas and our tea sampler come beautifully packaged in a recycled content canister, making them ideal and convenient gifts.

 

Steeping Instructions: Place one Flowering Tea in a teapot (a clear glass teapot is recommended so you may watch it unfurl). Bring water to a low boil and pour over tea. The tea leaves will unfurl and the tea flower will slowly open. Allow to steep 2-3 minutes, or to desired strength.
After enjoying the first pot, a Flowering Tea may be re-steeped 2-3 more times. The tea you make should be decanted into teacups within a short period of time so that leaves do not remain in hot water, which would adversely affect the fine taste of this tea. Please note that above estimations are based upon a teapot which holds 18-20 ounces.

  • 4 drops lavender oil
  • 3 drops chamomile essential oils

Directions

    Basic: Pour the cup of distilled water into the spray bottle.

    Add the drops of essential oils and shake very well.

    Cap the bottle, and allow to sit for a few hours before using.

    Shake the bottle before each use to evenly distribute the scented oil throughout the water.

    Use the label to describe what sort of air freshener each bottle is.

    And be sure to use the fine mist setting on your bottle, so the spray will be distributed nicely in the air.

    Here are some interesting ideas for wonderful air freshener sprays, but you can go ahead and create your own favorite blends using scents that you love the most!

    To use the following recipe, just add the recommended amounts of essential oil to the spray bottle with the distilled water, and follow the instructions as above.

    Please note that essential oils can vary in potency- for this reason, you can add or reduce the amounts of essential oil recommended in each recipe, if you find that the essential oil you've bought is either stronger or weaker than expected.
